Lost and Delirious

Those crazy Canadians are at it again. They made a movie that can rope the attention of both genders. Girls will like it because it captures the intensity of young love, and guys will be captivated by the plentiful girl-on-girl nude scenes.
The shy and introverted Mary is sent away to an all-girls boarding school, complete with plaid skirts and knee high socks. For the most part she seems extremely sheltered and emotionless. When she meets her new roommates, Tory and wild Pauline (Piper Perabo, Coyote Ugly), the audience is lead to believe that Mary will change overnight into a drunk, outgoing party girl. Lost and Delirious is halfway between the predictable Hollywood boarding school tale and a fresh approach to showing teenage love.
The film gets better as it goes along, transforming from a story that's been told too many times into an emotional ambush with an ending that's hardly happy. Although highlighted at the beginning, Mary is not the main focus of the movie. Her two roommates, who are secret lovers, take over the plot with their complicated love story.
At times the characters don't seem believable, and it is obvious they are acting and reading from a script. Of course, I know that they are reading off a script, but isn't the whole point of acting to be lifelike and sweep the viewer away into the story? The film also pushes an overused metaphor that compares a bird's freedom to one of the girl's lack thereof. But, as the story became thicker, I became more concerned with the consequences of the girls' actions. By the end I was truly moved with the passion and dedication expressed by these lost and delirious comrades.
