In a day and age where Westerns are a dying breed, 3:10 to Yuma, although it is a remake, may just single-handedly keep the genre alive. Essentially, the film is a two-part character portrait of a highly successful stagecoach robber/gang leader (Russell Crowe) and an equally unsuccessful one-legged rancher (Christian Bale). Crowe, again, delivers the type of high caliber performance that we’ve begun to take for granted, and Bale is exceptional as the desperate family man trying to save his farm. Propelled by sly dialogue and the increasing tension of two men in dire straits, 3:10 to Yuma exemplifies the perfect balance between action and drama—never a dull moment, but never over the top.
