A documentary about classic video arcade game Donkey Kong might seem like a tough sell, but trust us, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is nothing short of riveting. There’s plenty that will appeal to the ‘80s retro-geek in you, but the film’s true strength lays in its two central characters battling for supremacy. More than high scores and world records, The King of Kong is about dreams and determination. Champion and antagonist Billy Mitchell does his best to undermine outsider challenger, Steve Wiebe, by any means necessary, including light espionage and psychological warfare. Add some wacky, yet earnest supporting characters, source footage from the early ‘80s, hot sauce and transcendental meditation, and you have one winner of a film.
