The Redwalls

Editor's Review:

The Redwalls have that subdued poppy-folk sound that seems to be popular in former British colonies, where the locals once heard some early Beatles on an old Victrola and decided, “Hey, we can do that.” Of course, the Redwalls are from Chicago, but that still counts. Opening track “Game of Love” sums up the band’s oeuvre—a lugubrious love ballad that sounds like the Turtles on Quaaludes. When they do manage to work up some modicum of excitement, they launch almost immediately into doo-wop style serenades that could have been pulled straight from your parents’ Drifters records. While they’ve created some really infectious music before—their cover of the Speed Racer theme is a trippy nostalgia ride—this album is mostly good as background music.
