The Sword

Gods of the Earth

Written By: James Barone

Editor's Review:

With their second LP, Gods of the Earth, The Sword follow up their well-received stoner rock/classical doom masterpiece Age of Winters with the subtlety of a rampaging barbarian. Beginning with the triumphantly galloping instrumental “The Sundering,” Gods of the Earth packs a lot more punch than their previous effort thanks to bone-crushing tracks such as “Lords” and “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians.” But The Sword’s intoxicating Black Sabbath-informed tone still rings true with “Maiden, Mother & Crone,” a resin-crusted, Guitar Hero-ready heavy rock classic. From there, Gods of the Earth can get pretty self-indulgent, most notably when it sets sail on the wordless, lengthy “The White Sea.” Perhaps they’re just getting off on this stuff as much as most metal heads will.
