The Sword
Gods of the Earth
Editor's Review:
With their second LP, Gods of the Earth, The Sword follow up their well-received stoner rock/classical doom masterpiece Age of Winters with the subtlety of a rampaging barbarian. Beginning with the triumphantly galloping instrumental “The Sundering,” Gods of the Earth packs a lot more punch than their previous effort thanks to bone-crushing tracks such as “Lords” and “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians.” But The Sword’s intoxicating Black Sabbath-informed tone still rings true with “Maiden, Mother & Crone,” a resin-crusted, Guitar Hero-ready heavy rock classic. From there, Gods of the Earth can get pretty self-indulgent, most notably when it sets sail on the wordless, lengthy “The White Sea.” Perhaps they’re just getting off on this stuff as much as most metal heads will.Write Your Own Review
