State Bird

Mostly Ghostly

Editor's Review:

On Mostly Ghostly, Dover, OH’s State Bird employs a hodgepodge of different sounds. A hybrid of folk, rock and pop, the group is usually successful in creating catchy, albeit off-kilter, tunes. “I Saw the Light” sounds as if it could’ve been a castaway from The Polyphonic Spree with a bouncy mandolin-strummed intro, uplifting lyrics and gang-shouted, enthusiastic backing vocals. “Cathedral Tunes,” with its wafting accordion and splashy tambourine, creates an infectious shuffle that’s spiced up with pleasingly tasteful trumpet work. Songs such as “Ghost King pt. 1” and “The Hollerin’ Mountains” rely too heavily on quirkiness to cover up for bland songwriting, but that’s nothing a little skipping ahead won’t fix.
