Slug from Atmosphere and Murs from the Living Legends Launch Women Records

2005-12-13

After conning my way through numerous secretaries, publicists and other very important people, I finally tracked down the industry’s most jocked CEO Sean Daley, aka Slug from Atmosphere. En route after a power lunch with old rich white men, in the back of limo, with a clean black girl, and dirty white girl Sean two-wayed me his response regarding his new indie rock label Women Records. His co-CEO Murs, of Living Legends fame, was inaccessible on the white sand beaches of Fiji after closing out a seven figure deal regarding some shit you and I couldn’t even comprehend. These cats are living large, yo, and to think it began with selling four-track tapes out of a backpack. Without Freddy Adu, I bring to you Mr. Sean Daley.

If there had to be a definition of what the label was about, what would it be?
Two rappers spending too much money to make themselves look cool in front of skinny eeem women, and in the process hopefully helping some friends put out some good albums. We’re trying to become a stepping-stone for friends with bands in our cities very similar to what we do with our rap labels and rap careers. Women Records works under the same concepts as Rhymesayers, only it’s for non-rap.

What does the roster look like for the upcoming year, and are there any predictions how many artists will be on the label in the future?
I’m hesitant to talk about the roster due to my superstitions; hesitant to offer predictions due to my ulcer. We intend to take it day to day, being two artists who already are too involved with their own careers; we want this to remain comfy.

How is this label different from Rhymesayers?
Instead of having the brains and brawn of Rhymesayers (Siddiq, J-Bird, Beecham, etc.) you have Murs and I. Huge difference. Two rapping flaky artist types running an indie rock label. Sounds like a reality TV show.

Which role do you feel more comfortable in A&R, or artist?
A&r has a lot less insecurity involved. And the people who flirt with and hit on A&Rs are usually in bands.

Are there any other avenues you can foresee yourself getting into?
I still have this dream of opening a banana bread kiosk in the Mall of America. We would not only sell banana bread, but banana pudding, banana malts, smoothies, cake, pie, sandwiches, salad, anything I can shove a banana into.

What’s the difference dealing with indie rock bands compared to rappers?
Rap is all about clothing; indie rock is all about the hair.

What shouldn’t people do/say when trying to get signed?
“Do you have a girlfriend?”

What’s the farthest you’ve seen someone go to get their music to you?
“Do you have a girlfriend?”

Atmosphere — a.k.a. rapper Slug and his DJ-dû-jour, usually Abilities or Mr. Dibbs — holds down hip-hip in the Midwestern mecca of Minneapolis, MN. A member of the Rhymesayers crew (along with Eyedea), this enigmatic romeo of a rapper has found huge success in the underground with releases like Se7ens and the available-on-tour-only Sad Clown Bad Dub series. With the wide release of 2002’s God Loves Ugly it’s just a matter of time before this honest and talented MC breaks out on a large scale.
