Bringing Order to Chaos

Thrice are, in many ways, the type of band that the Taste of Chaos tour was created for. Though they are veterans of the Warped Tour (including the most recent run in 2005) and their melodic, but metallic sound appeals to that crowd, Thrice are definitely of a different order than the majority of Warped Tour bands. Heavier, yes, but also more vast, more layered. Their latest opus, Vheissu, is a stunning document of the band’s musical and intellectual chops, making them an ideal fit on this year’s more astute TOC roster. Drummer Riley Breckenridge gave us the lowdown on the band’s life since Vheissu, and his take on this year’s Taste of Chaos lineup.

When we last spoke at the Warped Tour, Vheissu hadn’t yet been released. What’s it been like since then, with the record finally out?
It’s been really fun. We took a long time making the record, so there was kind of all this nervous energy, getting excited to play these songs in the live setting, and we were kind of eager to see how the songs came across live. I think with any album you put out, the songs kind of take on a new life when you play them live, so it’s been really fun to see how these songs have developed live, and the response has been really positive and, I don’t know, we’re just having a great time.

How did you end up being a part of Taste of Chaos?
We were approached about Taste of Chaos when we were on Warped Tour. Kevin Lyman, the guy who runs Warped Tour, asked us if we’d be interested, and we definitely said that it was something that we wanted to do. They made it really cool, allowing us to have some input on some of the bands. So bands like Pelican and The Receiving End of Sirens, those were bands that we really wanted to have on the tour. Luckily, we got ‘em. I’m really, really psyched that Pelican is doing it.

Yeah, they definitely seemed to stand out as being a band that you wouldn’t expect to be on this tour.
It’s totally different than the other tours that they’ve done. I’m glad that they decided to do it and I can’t wait to see them live.

What’s your take on the rest of the lineup?
I think it’s got an interesting balance to it. It’s a little different than last year. You’ve got the really aggressive metal stuff with As I Lay Dying, and the Deftones will be doing what they’ve been doing for the past 10 or 12 years which is always fun to watch. I think we are eager to not just play heavy stuff, but show kind of the diversity we have, doing some aggressive stuff and doing some metal stuff; doing what we do and maybe sticking out a little bit. In that we can be kind of diverse.
