Saves the Day
Saving the Best for Last
2008-02-07
Although their former label, DreamWorks, has gone the way of the dodo, Saves the Day—a band whose age belies their status as veterans of the melodic rock scene—is nevertheless moving steadily forward on their path to not just a new record, but the next step in their ever-refining musical style. Frontman Chris Conley gave Synthesis the lowdown on the band’s still-nebulous label situation, their next record and doing things on their own terms.
What’s going on right now, as far as Saves the Day goes?
We’re just rehearsing every day and things are going really well. We’ve probably worked on 23 songs.
So what’s the deal with the next record?
Right now, we’re planning on recording with Steve Evetts, the producer who did our first two records.
Yeah, he just did that Senses Fail record.
Yeah he did, and he’s doing Story of the Year right now. He also actually engineered and mixed this newest Cure record. He said it was pretty crazy being in the studio with Robert Smith.
Wow.
Yeah, he sat next to him at dinner every night. He said that sometimes he had to pinch himself [laughs].
Have you guys got a timetable yet for when you might get the record tracked?
We’d like to be done by the end of June, but it’ll probably be more like the end of July.
Is this record going to be back on your old label, Vagrant, or is it still up in the air?
We’re not sure actually. We’re totally free agents. We have no contractual obligations to anybody, which feels really, really good for us. We don’t have anybody who has a say, or who’s pressuring us; we’re not on anybody else’s timeline except our own. We’re just trying to get it out and start touring in the fall. But we’re gonna have to find a label to put it out, so that’s why we wanna do the record now, so we have all summer long to figure out who’s gonna put it out.
It has to be nice to be able to choose what label you think will work the best.
Well…I hope there are people who bite at the bait, because you never know.
I’m pretty sure that someone will definitely want to put out the new Saves the Day record.
I hope so. We’re feeling good about the music.
What’s it all about? Is it a continuation of the last record?
It’s definitely another evolution; each record progresses quite a bit to the next one. I’d say this one has progressed equally as much, but it’s more rocking than In Reverie. Really upbeat songs, and I don’t know why, but the songs are kind of angry and….I don’t know, they’re not throwback material. They’re definitely songs that I needed to write, that came out naturally. And after a bunch of them came out, I was like, “well that’s kind of fortunate that they’re all kind of rockin’.” If they all would’ve been slow, then we would’ve been fucked.
Comments down for maintenance.
