Guttermouth, Samiam and Longshot

Guttermouth, Samiam and Longshot

the Brick Works, Chico, CA

2000-12-14

I had quite an interesting night. I got really drunk, saw a lot of friends I haven't seen in a while and almost got into a fight over absolutely nothing. Today I'm hung over and confused, but I'm used to that. Blackouts made me what I am today. Longshot from Portland was up first. They're a good band; too bad the singer is such a piece of shit. I wish they hadn't played the working class card, cause that shit is getting tired.
They're a four piece with an amazing lead guitarist. They play loud fast Punk rock, with a few Fugazi style breakdowns. The lyrics are introspective and at times a little preachy, I don't need some fuking rock guy to tell me how to live. If they come back I wont go see them, but that's personal, they are defiantly worth checking.
I have to be honest, I missed the first few songs of the Samiam set, I was drinking at the U Bar and lost track of time. I don't really like these guys on record, but they surprised me live. They actually put on a good show, at least as far as I can remember. I was really drunk by this time and it's a little fuzzy. I remember lots of sweaty shirtless people downstairs and a bunch of slobbering drunks upstairs .I wish I could tell you more about the music, but I don't really remember. I know I liked it and that's about it. Next time I'll try and slow down on the booze.
I've never really been a fan of Guttermouth, I don't really like frat punk. If I wasn't doing the review I would have left. Don't get me wrong they're a great band with a lot of credibility, just not my thing. They played a long set and the spit flew everywhere. The sound was good , but the atmosphere downstairs was wack. The real problem was the white male aggression, shirtless tough guys bullying the kids trying to dance. These guys belong in the gym not the pit. When I was leaving I heard their ringleader yell out let's go to Normal St., go figure. It's a shame the younger guys can't enjoy themselves without being picked on by baboons. I hope it's different next time, but I doubt it will be.
So I'm in front of the Lounge, (Towne that is) and this bald idiot tries to start a fight with little old me. It turns out it's the singer from Longshot, he had apparently had words with a friend of mine and was looking for trouble. Yelling "I'm not a racist" my response was "I don't know you and could give a fuck what you are." His friend eventually dragged him away, but the world should know he is a douche bag.

Bio[+]
When Guttermouth formed in Southern California’s Huntington Beach in 1989, they had little idea that their brand of pop-infused party punk rock would encompass the ideals for a generation of don’t-give-a-fucks. The group is comprised of vocalist Mark Adkins, guitarists Scott Sheldon and Derek Davis, drummer Captain James T. Nunn and bassist Stever Rapp. After signing with and releasing five albums for Nitro (the label started by Offspring frontman Dexter Holland), the group signed with punk luminaries Epitaph and released Covered with Ants in 2000. This group likes to get drunk and do stupid things. Suburbanite mayhem-inducing kiddies love them for their humorous, sophomoric approach to music.
