Hip-hop? At Moxie's? That was the general crowd reaction as I spread the word about the return of Z-Man of the 99th Dimension to Chico. Moxie's, a venue more known for its horned rim glasses and mohair sweater-laced indie rock shows, was about to blessed by Z-Dazzel, one of the freshest MCs born and raised in the City by The Bay. First to go on stage was DJ Dirty Sanchez of the Six Feet Deep Collective (If ya' don't know about Six Feet Deep, you will in the future). The dirty one sprinkled the crowd with dopeness that ranged from old school jams, Bay Area pimp shit, to straight up underground-backpacker-flava. Suckas better realize you can't front on Dirty Sanchez's crates.
Next to rock was Six Feet Deep's all-star team of DJs Mantis, OH, and G-Pek. Watching these cats work is ill, and I highly recommend catchin' them if you can. There was almost some kind of telepathic communication going on between the trio as they pounded out some of the hardest beats I've heard and accompanied them with scratching, blowing me away. And if any of the mad scratchers out there pay close attention, they might even catch one of G-Pek's signature slow motion body tricks.
After about a half-hour of turntable terrorism, Shecklove and MC Heatha Killa of the infamous Becky Sagers joined the DJs onstage. Now, if I had a dime for every time I heard some closed-minded fuck say "These guys suck!" I could take the money, buy Def Jam records and put out a Becky Sagers record featuring every shitty rapper on MTV right now (imagine Ludacris and Heatha Killa doing "Lining Up The Bitches"… aww shit!). Oh well, the Sagers do what they do and it will never change, so accept and embrace it (or just leave like I do). Finally the $3 main event got on stage. Unfortunately Z-Man's DJ, Young Slim (the gorilla on the cut) couldn't find a baby sitter, so he couldn't make it; forcing Z-Man along with playa potna Eddie K to rock with only a mini disc. Z didn't let it slow him down. Like Santa Claus, the two MCs each pulled out huge bottles of Cisco from their bags and the madness began. From the start, Z and Eddie K pounded out an hour's worth of crowd favorites, including "Disco Tek Wreck," "Little Titties" and a remixed rendition of "Rat Poison."
The highlight of the night was a Cisco-inspired Dirty Sanchez collaboration with Eddie K; the crowd rockin' "Bounce to This." I hadn't seen that much collar-poppin' since the last video E-40 made. Despite some post show drama and a sticky Moxie's floor the show was a success. And if you happened to miss this one, rumor has it Z-man has to come back up in a couple of weeks.
