Kinky
Vynyl, Los Angeles, CA
2002-04-18
In the tradition of your typical LA show, it's not an unusual thing to see
the same group of stuffy industry folk shmoozin' it up on the company dime with
little, if any, concern for the poor band playing their little hearts out on
stage. It's also no big shocker to feel that uncomfortable chill pass in and
out of that infinite black hole between the stage and the too-cool-for-school-arm-folders
holding up the back bar and silently judging the room. But what's not very typical
for, say, a cold Thursday night in LA is this: Having pushed and begged your
way through a rabid, anxious crowd in order to get to the club's entrance, you
finally make your way inside this sardine-packed, 98-degree venue. Once in you
are so completely taken with the band on stage that you suddenly find your own
jaded ass shakin' away and feverishly rubbing up next to the odd sweaty dancing
man to your right and actually, well…enjoying it!
Introducing Kinky - my new favorite band and the sonic sensation hailing from
Mexico who fiercely commanded the attention of every last soul at club Vynyl
Thursday night (4/18). Kinky are 5 of the most adorable and talented
Latin cuties this girl has ever had the privilege of gyrating her big ole white
booty to, and clearly the rest of the crowd sweated in agreement! With each
and every song, Kinky effortlessly combined the electrifying energy of multi-layered
electro-pop with the non-stop and alluring rhythms of global dance, taking the
audience on a mind-altering, hour-plus-long dance-rock adventure into groove
and back.
The intensity of drummer Omar Gongora set the stage for Cesar Pliego to work
his bass magic. That, coupled with the unique electronic flavor of Ulises Lozano
and the funkdafied guitar sounds from Carlos Cháirez created the perfect
setting for frontman Gil Cerezo. His smooth Spanish vocals and turntable wizardry
(not to mention a few mighty impressive guitar stylings) captured our attention
and left us yearning for más y más.
Together Kinky delivered a beyond solid live show and now offer a self-titled
debut album that will give you a reason to forget all about that silly little
thing called the eject button. On a scale of one to 10, I give the Kinky experience
six tequila shots and two pitchers of extra strong margaritas! Kink on, my Latin
brothers, kink on…
