Face to Face

Face to Face

the Brick Works, Chico, CA

2002-05-13

Due to the glory of finals, I became so involved with studying that I missed all the opening bands - still, there is no excuse. From what I've heard, the opening bands - Thrice, Midtown, Jimmy Rig and Movie Life - were awesome. And of course, so was Face to Face. The guys approached the stage looking comfortable with being back in Chico. Frontman Trever Keith admitted he "loved being back in Chico, especially getting tattoos here from Sacred Art Tattoo." The crowd was singing and moshing to all songs performed by the new three-piece band (which was previously a four-piece). Between each song you could hear people screaming their requests to play "Disconnected." This song seemed to be their signature.
The Brick Works was jam packed with fans of all the bands. Besides the moshing crowd downstairs, fans circled around the stage in the upstairs balcony. Fans were sitting on bar stools, looking ready to dive into the crowd. The place held an ambiance of happy punk-rockers.
Face to Face played a variety of songs from all albums. The latest album, How to Ruin Everything, which hit stores March 9, was referred to by the band several times. Even though the album is only about two months old, it didn't seem to phase fans. From the three songs they played off the new album, fans still sang along with Keith's lyrics.
Keith, the lead singer, confessed to me in an interview two weeks ago his love for Elvis Presly. He showed this off to the crowd by performing a little "Jail House Rock" in between songs and fans were loving it.
Keith involved the crowd when he played "Bill of Goods" off of How to Ruin Everything. He announced that everyone needed to sing "OOH OOH OOOH" (got that?) when his singing stopped. The audience responded well to the request, Keith even told fans to give themselves a hand.
When the band finally played "Disconnected," it felt like an eternity. The crowd cheered, pumping their arms into the air and singing along loudly. The band walked off the stage after this song, then the lights turned off. People began to scream and chant "Face to Face, Face to Face!" "Okay, we got time for one more," Keith said right before the band's finale.
