The show commenced when the Becky Sagers made it to the stage around 9:30ish. The witnesses were not quite all there, probably because 9:30pm is too early for the Chico nightlife, but the Sagers performed with true Sagers style. The verbiage spat into the microphone played off the uniform beats. MC Hethakilla and MC Shecklove busted abstract verse after abstract verse with comedic undertones. Some of the lyrics slipped by me when I was distracted by a guy in a metallic silver vest, who was hippin' and hoppin' to every Sagers song.
When Thug E. Fresh got up on stage there was a surge of the crowd to the front. Full of energy and surely a 40oz., Fresh got things rolling with some hard beats filled with his lawless gangster energy. Fresh's linguistic barrage was aided and abetted by Six Feet Deep comrade Fay Dog, who slipped and pimped his way into every young lady's… well you know. The sound was a little off, but the rhyming was on pace with no nonsense songs like "Dent Yo' Tooth." Fresh and Fay Dog complement each other like crunchy peanut butter and jam. They mixed it up on the Norcal tribute "Hella", and the Six Feet Deep dance song of the year, "Stripper Party." But the real nasty Fay Dog came out in "Nothing Nice" and "12 Days of Pimpness." The local crowd really enjoyed the thuggish localism of Fresh and the Fay Dog's pimp attire. The crowd down in front was rapping along and the guy in that metallic silver vest was shaking and twitching kind of like something was broken.
Gametightelectro, like their name says, had game and were tight. The beats were fast and their stage presence was confrontational. Their set was short, but the crowd remained right up front pumping their fists. The Electro sound was more hip-hop in origin in comparison to Thug E. Fresh and Fay Dog's more gangster approach. Electro definitely represented a solid underground current of the West Coast rap sound.
Sacred Hoop, man… where do you start? The headliners calmly took the stage and proceeded to bring the roof down. The spinning was insane, the lyrics killed, and the performance was spewing the plutonic energy that was volatile and irresistible. My head never stopped nodding and my eyes never left the stage. Everyone else had the same problem, except they knew the lyrics and were keeping pace. They kept the show bouncing until the early morning, well past my usual bedtime, and the crowd never ceased. The sound bombarded the walls of The Senator with super smooth beats that were constantly being manipulated by the blurred hands of the DJ. Aside from the sound problems, Sacred Hoop, Game Tight Electro, Thug E. Fresh, Fay Dog and the Becky Sagers slammed the show home with expectations of a sequel.

Is it possible to be too underground? It seems like the case when hearing about Palo Alto based Hip Hop trio Sacred Hoop. Since 1994 MC Luke Sick, Producer Vrse Murphy, and DJ Mars (who replaced DJ Fondouglas in 1997) have been putting out some of the most innovative, alcohol & narcotic-inspired hip-hop available. However, because of their unwillingness to kiss the ass of other Bay Area underground artists, The Hoop is constantly overlooked when it comes to playing large showcases and appearing on Bay Area music compilations. Despite all that, they still remain true to the streets, as well as to thier legion of disturbingly loyal fans.
