Low Flying Owls

Moxie's Café, Chico, CA

2002-02-09

When I arrived at Moxie's, the stage was empty and Low Flying Owls weren't anywhere in sight. I didn't know if I was early or the band was late, but I certainly had the time to sit around and mull it over, which is what I did. Over the next hour, I drank two cups of very strong coffee back to back out of sheer boredom. I was bouncing off the walls by the time the lights went dim and the quintet from Sacramento hopped on stage.
Whatever bitterness I was harboring over having to wait around quickly disappeared once Low Flying Owls started playing. Their music is enjoyable by virtue of the fact that it's so hard to pigeonhole. I've heard people compare their unique sound to British pop, psychedelic rock and everything in between. One thing that immediately sets them apart from more standard rock bands is the incorporation of a keyboard and their use of sampling. One song in particular had crickets chirping to a variegated effect. The drummer, Sam Coe, provided solid backbeats and fluid rhythm sections. The vocals were pretty good too. Frontman Jared Southard is more concerned with expressing emotion in his singing than hitting every note perfectly. One good song was "Sparkling Jets." Incidentally, it was a bit heavier than the rest. Throughout the show, it was not uncommon for people walking by on the sidewalk to stop for a moment and listen. Some of them would actually end up inside and by the end of the night the place was jam-packed.
Low Flying Owls' sound has been described in many different ways. I just like to think of it as good music. I don't think I need to wax their car anymore. The only way you'll understand is by going to see them for yourself.
