Homegrown, Sugarcult, Finch & Yellowcard

As it seems to be to Chico's dismay I came to this concert with the excitement of seeing two of my favorite bands, Finch and Yellowcard. I had heard the name Homegrown many a time but never actually heard anything from them. The name Sugarcult had me pretty skeptical and in all honesty I was up for leaving after the opening bands.
Much to my surprise on arrival only half the floor had been occupied and I walked a clean path to the front bar next to a couple of friends who had been in line since six. Finch hit the stage first in a bigger blast of impressive rage than I was familiar with. Their time on stage seemed short, quickly skipping to the next song with a few remarks of disgust towards the crowd who seemed to have just gotten a lobotomy.
After setting up the stage with a peculiar spray of disinfectant to the lead mic, Yellowcard came sporting their innovative violin tunes and some impressive gymnastics that got about 3% of the crowd moving which was only me and my colleagues. They seemed to appreciate our interaction, which is more than I could say for the rest of the house. After they left the stage we went and purchased our goodies and apparel and claimed a booth to watch the next two bands.
Sugarcult came on with a few members sporting some hairdo’s looking like they were rejected from the auditions for Orgy. I really have to say I was impressed with their sound and Tim's amazing ability to play drunk, smothered in shaving cream, and having been stripped naked from the waist down for the second half of their stage time. The crowd, much to my surprise, picked up somewhat after a few songs and actually realized they were at the concert rather than watching it on the tube. Sugarcult eventually won my heart after revealing a small prank they pulled on Finch consisting of some Polaroid’s of a couple mics and drumsticks that were used by the opening band stashed neatly in someone's posterior.
Homegrown came on looking like a group of guys who had just decided to start a band, and after a few remarks trying for humor and a couple of cool chaps pulling some "sweet" air guitar moves in front of me, my optimistic view was blown and we left hoping it was just a bad night for the band. Despite the crowd and my ignorance towards Homegrown, the show was awesome for viewing the other three bands.
Yellowcard mentioned returning to Chico sometime in the future and I recommend going to see them if you missed out on this stunning performance.

With catchy choruses, amped performances and a shamelessly poppy approach to punk rock, Santa Barbara’s Sugarcult has been performing their aloof and bouncy music since forming in 1998. Vocalist / guitarist Tim Pagnotta apparently named the group after his neighbors; seven lesbians who referred to themselves as the ‘sugar cult.’ With bassist Airin Older and drummer Ben Davis providing harmonies and Marko 72 (expatriate of The Ataris, Swingin' Utters and Nerf herder) on guitar, the group has received national exposure through 2001’s Warped Tour, supporting bands such as Blink 182, Unwritten Law and Good Charlotte on national tours, and The Decibel Music Conference in Trinidad, West indies in May of 2001. Their Ultimatum debut, Start Static was released in August of 2001 and was produced by Matt Wallace.
