NumberOneGun, Noise Ratchet & The Americas

The Brick Works, Chico, CA

I feel so much pride being a Chico local because when a band like NumberOneGun comes from Chico and fills people’s lives with the joy of their music, I can say that I live in the same town as they do. The show this past Monday at The Brick Works was packed; I’ve seen bands that have come through signed to major labels that didn’t have as big an audience as NumberOneGun had. I was impressed with the turnout.
When I arrived, The Americas were playing and they sounded amazing as always. The bass of the drums flowed up from the floor and I could feel it pulsating through my body. Casey Deitz was beating the shit out of them. They had a new song and frontman Travis Weurthner did a bit of screaming in it. I absolutely love the sound of his voice when he screams; he should be in a hardcore band. Even though the microphone was sending electric shocks through his teeth, he smiled through every song.
Noise Ratchet from San Diego played next. They were the typical SoCal emo-punk band, but they were crazy. The first song they played, they started thrashing around on stage, throwing their guitars around to the beat of the drums. I was surprised that none of them ran into each other because they were all over the place. A mosh pit got started for a little bit and everyone was thrashing around. After the show, they lit firecrackers off in front of The Brick Works, almost hitting people and lighting trees on fire. They were so full of energy that they wore me out just watching them.
NumberOneGun got on stage, and it was the first time I had seen them. Needless to say, I was impressed with their live show. I bought their Forever EP a while ago, and I thought it was okay, but their live show was ten times better. So many people were there rocking out, it made me happy that all these people were supporting the local scene.. The band played my favorite songs, “The Starting Line” and “Forever.” Their lyrics were honest and sincere. When Jeff Schneeweis and Ben Tietz sang together, it sounded amazing.. They gave out a free sample CD produced by Salvage Records and it made me anxious to hear the full-length that will come out this summer.
