Thirst, Goldmind & Thom Chacon
LaSalle’s, Chico, CA
2004-03-24
It is an indisputable fact of nature that Friday the 13th brings bad luck. So
last Friday, while the rest of the world was surely running around in a panic,
the more informed citizens flooded the only safe haven to be found: LaSalles.
Now, you are probably thinking, What makes LaSalles so lucky? I mean,
Ive gotten lucky there a few times, but
oh. Now you see my point.
On top of that, each of the bands on the bill that night did their part to keep
the good luck flowing.
The evening began just past 9 PM as singer / songwriter Thom Chacon took the stage armed with nothing but a guitar (guitars are very lucky - anything that helps little emo kids get some has to be). Though on paper not having a band to back you up sounds like a handicap, it really wasnt. His songs were dynamic and intelligent enough to stand on their own and they made for a perfect beginning to an evening of great music. Though his set was strong top to bottom, I would have to say that I Would - a piece about the feelings of helplessness and claustrophobia that invade when we realize that our lives have slipped into the mundane - was my personal favorite. After a great performance, Thom thanked his audience and made way for the next act on the bill.
When Goldmind took the stage, they wasted no time turning the energy up a few notches. Halfway through their set of calculated, melodic rock, the venue was nearly packed, and it was clear that many of those in attendance were already fans of Goldminds music. Those who werent already fans were quickly drawn in by the bands charismatic singer, who kept an amazing rapport with the audience all night long. As the clock neared 11 PM, Goldmind concluded their show with what may have been the most drawn-out finale since the beginning of time. It was great.
Headlining the night was a band that really needs no introduction around these parts: Thirst. Having them play at your venue is always lucky, because its basically guaranteed that theyre going to pack the place and make you rich off your cut of the cover charge alone. From the first chord to the last, Thirst played to an absolutely captivated sea of people that never ran out of energy. Another Side, Come Over, In My Eyes and really just about every other song the band played generated a huge response from their audience, but the cheering reached deafening decibels when frontman Mike Comfort thanked everyone for making their CD the top seller at Tower Records for such a long time (though they were recently knocked down by Incubus). As a conclusion to their amazing set, Thirst invited everyone up on stage to have a good time and dance away what remained of the unluckiest day of the year. Everyone was happy to do so.
