Pulley

60 Cycle Hum

Editor's Review:

"Rocknroll is dead!" sang Lenny Kravitz. Well, punk is dead, if you ask me, and Pulley, Epitaph Records’ latest great punk hope, on its second full-length CD, 60 Cycle Hum, prooves that even if you play punk well, it can still suck.

60 Cycle Hum is just that: a virtually single-speed, almost monotonal disc that is just plain boring. Singer "Scott," guitarist "Mike," guitarist/bassist "Jim" and drummer "Jordan" made their sophomore effort with no more than two people together at a time in the studio. I think if they got together more, they would have realized that their song mix needed a little more variety.

Most of the songs are hard and fast like, the lead-off cut "If." A couple strive for variation: "Padded Cell" is more on the slower, melodic punk/hard-rock side, and "Separated" is actually popish. There’s even a five-second-long guitar solo on this one. Gee, thanks.

I’m not sure why punk bands get stuck in one gear. Maybe that’s why punk’s dead.

"Outside Opinion" ends with the sound of what I guess is a 60-cycle hum, running on for about seven solid minutes, before unfolding into a cool, bluesy instrumental. Now that’s what I’m talking about.
