Jeff Buckley

Mystery White Boy

Editor's Review:

Like a shiver down your neck, Jeff Buckley’s voice echoes from beyond the grave contorting itself over the intricate backdrop of tinkling cymbals and tense altered chords. With catacomb-like reverb on the dueling Telecasters, Buckley’s songs do battle with dynamics and contrasting feels, conveying a sense of immaculate power and fathomless beauty. The movement ranges, from infinitely delicate to absolutely bombastic, in "Mojo Pin" are staggering. The pure high notes in Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah," the ‘minor fall and the major lift,’ are tear-jerking. Having never experienced his live performance before his passing, I’m depressed by this live album’s brilliance. It sure makes for a good argument against swimming drunk in the Mississippi River. If you’ve never heard Jeff Buckley before, I suggest you start with Mystery White Boy. Immediately.
