Nappy Roots

Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz

Editor's Review:

Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz is the debut album from Nappy Roots, a Kentucky based hip-hop group. The accents help Nappy Roots sound like Outkast, but instead of a funky melody they use blues guitars, mandolins and an organ. Their harmonies are nearly as good as Jurassic 5, though most of the songs are lavishly rapped. A basic drum machine regulates the tunes and lyrics so the beats are synchronized, layered and phat. The guys keep the beat with their vocals letting it flow melodiously or keeping it quick and tight. The CD is lengthy, covering a lot of ground and six hearty voices. You can count on these guys making a scene in the music business.
