the Herbaliser

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Editor's Review:

England's The Herbaliser, the core of which is Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba, continues its pursuit of the perfect downtempo record, and though Something Wicked… isn't all instrumental like previous releases from The Herbaliser, this duo-turned-full-eight piece band is one step closer to production nirvana. The album's initial and title track features an eerily funky harpsichord loop and the sultry female croon of Seaming To, while "Verbal Animé" features a more stripped-down musical experience that is augmented by rhymes from Dilated Peoples' Rakaa. "Good Girl Gone Bad" carries with it the thick cockney accent of rapper Wildflower. But The Herbaliser's best stuff is still within the instrumental tracks, like the lounge-y and smooth "Mr. Holms" and the anthemic "Worldwide Connection," both showcasing The Herbaliser's deft ability in songwriting and the technical mastery with which they bring the music to fruition.
