Grandaddy

Concrete Dunes

Editor's Review:

Sometimes tracks don't make the journey from the studio to the album for a reason. For a lesson in this phenomenon please consult Grandaddy's excellent 2000 album, Sophtware Slump, and then listen to this collection of "rarities, imports, previously unreleased and out of print tracks." A fair enough collection of songs, but not the follow up I'd expect from this band. Meandering tracks like the ballad "12-PAK-599" could have remained off this CD and wrought less damage. Still, Grandaddy's songwriting skills are undeniable. "Wretched Songs," spans the lo-fi guitar stylings of Sonic Youth, the dramatic spacey-ness of Bowie and the melodic psychedelia of the Beatles, somehow managing to meld those styles together into an enjoyably disturbing pop song. Plus, the album art is an amazing collage of concrete skate park photos.
