Mogwai

Rock Action

Editor's Review:

Glasgow, Scotland quintet Mogwai obviously doesn’t define the term Rock Action as most people do. In the case of the group’s latest release, you will not find screaming guitars, thunderous bass or pulsating rhythms…well, you will find pulsating rhythms, but they do their thing — which feels almost like breathing — as a root to various strains of ethereal sonic emanations, with a lofty, airy drive behind it all. These songs explore the soft and dramatic, delving into territory of cool, lush and vivid aural pastures with multi-instrumental melodic passages featuring electronic string arrangements and bright piano lines, and percussion that effectively flies below the radar, bolstered by deep, resonating bass bombs that shake the foundations and result in a subtle fuzz tone over everything — an intricately woven, gray blanket of sound.
