Powderfinger

Odyssey Number Five

Editor's Review:

This album is a case of good timing; if Odyssey Number Five had come out three years ago, I probably would have given it a poor review, citing lack of originality. Since then, my '80s pop nostalgia has kicked into full swing, and everything that reminds me of The Fine Young Cannibals is gold. With the upbeat tempos and brash resilience of early 1990s Brit Pop and a classic '80s sense of catchy melody, Powderfinger is great example of the Australian pop sound. Some tracks, like "My Happiness," border on overtly radio-friendly; I can easily imagine hoards of Aussies swinging Fosters around braying out the chorus, but not without the mild pangs associated with light beer rock.
