Change is a Sound
Editor's Review:
Change may be a sound, but this sound isn’t much of a change — just basic punk rock. The guitars and bass, for the most part, are playing the same chords / notes. Still, as far as punk goes this is pretty good — it’s got some interesting time signature changes — and is about as vital it comes. Solidarity is stressed throughout this record whether the subject is standing up against the police state ("Sunset on 32nd") or rejecting capitalism and religion ("Chalkline"). The best song musically and lyrically is the last track, "My Design." It features a cool breakdown that builds with the kick drum, toms and growling guitars and is about the way the system has a penchant for crushing our humanity. Like other great negative utopia works (e.g. 1984, Brave New World), singer Thomas Barnett relates the struggles of the human soul against oppression in his lyrics.
