Editor's Review:
Richard James, the mastermind behind Aphex Twin, is no stranger to the electronic
music scene. With roots sprouting back to the '80s, he derived his first acid
/ hardcore brand techno track at the age of 14, and after DJing raves around
the Cornwall, England area, became one of the, if not the pioneer of
the so-called "intelligent" electronic scene. In other words, his
music will not raise you into a euphoric or ecstatic level of bliss. It will
probably do just the opposite and frighten the hell out of you. His latest release,
drukqs, seems to be his most abstract and psychedelic album to date and
ranges somewhere in between eclectic ambience and furious electronic rage. Tracks
vary from eerie piano clips, to answering machine messages left to him by his
parents, to teched-out drum and bass and Casio-quality odes to madness. The
highly reverbed piano tracks stand out as the apex of the album because of the
unnerving and icy edge it musters. His electro tracks seem just a little too
unstructured for my taste. Just about as odd as music gets, yet remarkably marketable
to those interested in the experimental side of electronic music. Inexplicably,
a "Parental Advisory" sticker adorns the double disk album's face.
One can only assume that some one up the line either thinks that listening to
this recording will drive young, impressionable minds insane, or that the word
"drukqs" is offensive. Thirty tracks of insanity await you.
