Nas

Stillmatic

Editor's Review:

Though Nas will always get credit as one of hip-hop's heavy hitters - thanks largely to his stellar '94 debut release, Illmatic - his reputation has fallen off greatly in the last several year. Three sub-par albums following Illmatic knocked Nas' credibility down a few notches, and though his name has seen lots of press in recent months, it's been mostly as the butt of a ongoing joke by arch-enemy Jay Z. Which is why the most scathing (and best) track on Stillmatic is "Ether" in which the J-Hova gets a little taste of his own medicine. Nas also disses Prodigy of Mobb Deep and anyone else he can think of on "Destroy and Rebuild," while claiming his allegiance to and love for raps fallen heroes, and asserts that he's still on top, which the title Stillmatic - an obvious play on the title of his best work - alludes to. That of course, is a matter of opinion.
