Sevendust

Animosity

Editor's Review:

The latest album by Sevendust is an interesting contribution to the band's oeuvre. Having received heat on their sophomore effort for being too redundant, it's almost as if the Atlanta-bred nü-metal quintet has made a conscious effort this time around to be anything but that. In addition to the usual gut-wrenching vocals and riff-driven sound oftentimes associated with nü-metal bands, Animosity contains several songs that are more contemplative and melodious. It is here that Lajon Witherspoon's vocals are really allowed to shine. Check out "T.O.A.B." and "XMas Day." The former gets pretty aggro while the latter treads in calmer waters. That difference showcases the band's versatility and makes me anxious to hear their next album.

Sevendust {consisting of Lajon Witherspoon (lead vocals), Clint Lowery (guitars and vocals), Vince Hornsby (bass), John Connolly (guitar), and Morgan Rose (drums and vocals)} distinguish themselves within the nu-metal scene through their heightened appreciation for melody and harmony in addition to their brutally heavy, rhythmically-oriented sound. Assembling in Atlanta, GA in 1995, the group released their self-titled debut two years later and followed it up with Home in 1999. At that point, they had played over 800 shows and released two albums in less than four years — quite an impressive track record for such a young band. Their latest TVT records release, Animosity focuses on Witherspoon’s powerful voice and has earned them a near-rabid fan base.
