Oddman

It all Starts Here

Editor's Review:

Chico's heaviest and hardest working hard rock band, Oddman, drops their second full-length CD this week, and its 12 huge hard rock tracks are enough to shake the fillings out of your teeth. The vibe on It All Starts Here runs from poignant vilification of nemeses to self-reflective confusion to outright pissed-off aggression. "Rock Star" kicks a quick, deep and bottom-heavy groove; "From Duality" is a slowly bone-crushing and oddly melodic tune; and the album's title track is thick, with a catchy, rhythmic gate. What shines through most, though, is the band's determination - not just as songwriters and hard working musicians (this is the second CD Oddman has put out in as many years) but also as a force of growth. Not only is Oddman angling for a shot at a bigger life than Chico, but their music is becoming a bit more dynamic. It could stand to delve a little deeper into the nuances of songwriting, but It All Starts Here is a great sophomore effort from a band whose growth is obviously just beginning.
