The Future Is Now
Editor's Review:
Even though The Future is Now is Nonphixion's debut album, the group
is far from new. DJ Eclipse, Gortex, Sabac Red, and Ill Bill released their
first twelve-inch single in 1996 and since then the underground hasn't stopped
buzzing. The boys from Brooklyn played indie label hopscotch for a while and
finally inked a distribution deal with Landspeed records. Now with worldwide
distribution at their disposal the question is: Is the world finally ready for
Nonphixion? Take the underground styles of Brooklyn New York, lyrics about government
conspiracies, drug abuse, street life etc, production from the most consistent
producers in hip-hop, DJ Premier, Large Professor, Beatnuts, Pete Rock, Necro,
and chances are your group won't be underground for long. The Future Is Now
stands out as a versatile record perfect for rocking in your headphones as you
walk through your turf, or, if you don't leave the house much, throw it on your
roommate's booming stereo while you get high and play Grand Theft Auto 3.
Now the entire album is solid, however some standout tracks include "Drug Music",
the paranoid "The C.I.A. is Trying to Kill Me," the eerily sinister
"There is No Future", the party knockin' "Rock Stars," as
well as the post-September 11th state-of-New York address, "Suicide Bomb."
There is no art school bullshit here; this is some straight up hip-hop for longtime
fans of underground hip-hop. For you suckas who always want me to compare it
to other shit, think pre MTV Wu-Tang, throw in some Boot Camp Click, then mix
in a little Canibus high on cocaine.
