Pedro the Lion

Control

Editor's Review:

From the drawn out note that begins "Options," the album's opening song, Pedro the Lion sets the tone for what is heard throughout Control. The ten songs on this CD are moody, atmospheric and harrowing. On guitar, David Bazan, who is also the singer / songwriter and only permanent band member, blends sustained notes, melodies and clean and distorted chords in varying, intricate patterns creating a swirling sound. As a result, this album displays diverse emotions from the spiritually ecstatic "Rapture" to the downtrodden rumination of "Rejoice." Bazan's rich, earthy vocals aspire to greater heights and lend strength to his haunting, sometimes disturbing lyrics, which are especially striking in "Second Best." Control blew me away. Make sure you don't pass this one by.
