Denali

Denali

Editor's Review:

In their self-titled debut, Denali, a four-piece outfit from Richmond, Virginia, has created ten songs that are cool, slow and detached. The album's most remarkable feature is Maura Davis, Denali's frontwoman. Her frail vocals are enthralling throughout, especially on "Lose Me," "Function" and "Time Away" where her breathy, soothing tones give the songs a lullaby's sweetness. However, the quality of her voice is sometimes lost when jarring, overdriven guitars kick in on songs like "French Mistake" and "Everybody Knows." This album is at its best in its quieter moments. Denali is an enhanced CD that features a creepy video for "Relief," one of the more haunting and ambient of the ten songs that is nicely directed by Ward Howarth.
