Dead Low Tide
The Eagle is Landing…2002 Demos
Editor's Review:
You might remember Nate Manny (guitar), Spencer Moody (vocals) and Coady Willis
(drums) from gothic- and revival-flavored art punk band The Murder City Devils.
Well, forget all that. The three (plus Devils' roadie Gabe) have joined with
former Godheasilo and Enemymine bass player Mike Kunka to form Dead Low Tide,
and the resulting sound is loud, thick and thunderously resonant indie-flavored
rock bolstered by an intense rhythmic anchor and guitar tones that range from
deep riffage to piercing staccato.
The most unique and recognizable aspect of Dead Low Tide's music is of course
the vocal delivery of the bespectacled Moody, perhaps indie rock's most passionate
and enigmatic frontman. His wailing cries and howling yelps somehow effortlessly
find their place within the music - or perhaps it's the music that find it's
place around Moody. Either way, his caterwaul leaves an indelibly recognizable
mark. Manny's tense and building guitar licks grow to fill out the space created
by having only one guitar player, while Kunka's ability to work with Willis'
percussive talents and style is what makes Dead Low Tide's bottom-end vibe excitingly
different. It resonates with Kunka's ability to harmonize low-end notes and
complement Manny's wide range of guitar expression, and in conjunction with
Willis' devastating drumming, it provides a steel-strong backbone to Manny and
Moody's furious aural presence. Not an official release, this collection of
five demo tracks is a promising look at what's hopefully to come from the Northwest's
newest sensation.
