Tom Waits
Blood Money
Editor's Review:
While it isn't necessarily an inferior album, I don't really have much to say
about Blood Money that wasn't said in the review of Alice. It
has amazing orchestration of primarily woodwinds, guitars, and strange vibraphone
things, hit and miss lyrical content, and a truckload of formulaic ballads that
I don't tend to listen to. Like Alice, it does have three or four gems
that make me wish Tom Waits would turn himself loose on a symphony, such as
the beautiful chaos on the instrumental, "Calliope." What is the explanation?
Well, I can't make any meaningful distinction between the style and instrumentation
of the two albums, so I am forced to ask: did Tom pull the double release move
(cut two CDs and mix quality with b-sides)?
