Quarashi
Jinx
Editor's Review:
Straight outta Iceland, Quarashi is hitting up the U.S. with its poppy-rap
sound, which contains a mixture of hip-hop, '70s funk and bumping bass sounds.
Jinx is loaded with jumpy / catchy tunes perfect to rock out or chill
to. All songs are pretty fast and Beastie Boys-ish, with the exception of "Dive
in," a more mellow and laid-back song. "Stick 'Em Up," the first
single, is one of those songs that sticks in your head for days - in a good
way. Marked by near-constant references to "locos," the Spanish language
is incorporated into almost every song including "Fuck You Puto" and
"Bless." This is definitely an album worth checking out.

Quarashi
Bio[+]Hailing from Reykjavik, Iceland, this four-piece group developed its sound from American hip-hop, British break-beats and Icelandic punk rock. The group was formed by producer / songwriter Sölvi Blondal and rapper / singer Hössi Olafsson in 1996, and added Steini “Stoney” Fjelsted after meeting him while doing community service at a National Park. Fjelsted, a former skating champion-turned-tag artist brought the group’s name to the table (Quarashi is a term meaning “supernatural,” as well as a surname for the Musilm prophet Muhammad). With the addition of Sölvi’s long-time friend Omar Swarez, the group was completed. Their latest album Jinx (Sony) is a mixture of rap, hard rock, hip-hop and industrial influences.
