El P

Fantastic Damage

Editor's Review:

"We need to go back in time to when motherfuckers could rock!" El Producto shouts on "Dolorean," just one of many ill tracks on his latest sonic roller-coaster, Fantastic Damage. Producto has managed to once again push the sound of hip-hop further into the future, just as the debut release from his first crew, Company Flow, the classic Funcrusher Plus immediately gave all the little hip-hop nerds in the world a pitched tent in their baggy pants when it dropped in '97.
Sure to be on every music critic's top ten albums of the year, Fantastic Damage is 16 tracks of pure Pro-Tools magic - layers upon layers of sound, samples and scratches. Seriously, the beats are so crazy they make me want to start doing hallucinogens again, and are best absorbed through an oversized set of expensive headphones. If you are one of those hip-hop-purist, indier-than-thou, keep-it-real fuckheads, this is especially the album for you to stay cooped up in your lab with, over-analyzing and reeling from the sheer magnitude of the music. But wait, there's more…El Producto is a good rapper too, but you won't be rhyming along with your favorite Fantastic Damage verses without the help of an inhaler. Thanks to digital technology, El P has made breathing irrelevant on hip-hop albums, his resulting rhymes running together at such a blistering rate, the overall result is like a relentless verbal beating - a beating you'll keep going back for.
