Vans Warped Tour 2002 Tour Compilation

Editor's Review:

Though the Lilith Fair and Horde Festival met their demise years ago, Vans Warped Tour continues to thrive, bringing with it music that reminds us why pop music sucks. The mighty NOFX breaks us into the high-energy punk that dominates the album with "Three on Speed." Other little gems on the album include Sum 41 with "Crazy Amanda Bunkface" and Warped Tour regulars the Mighty Mighty Bosstones with their trombone driven "You Gotta Go!" Underground culture darlings Flogging Molly bring a different flavor of bluegrass with "What's Left of the Flag" that makes you feel downright patriotic. In other words, there's a little bit of everything for that aggressive release…have at it!

When they started off in Maryland in 1996, Good Charlotte could barely play three chords. Twin brothers Joel (vocals) and Benji (guitar) embraced music as an outlet for familial issues-induced stress, leaving their prior endeavors (namely, baseball) behind. After adding high school friends Paul (bass) and Aaron (drums) to the lineup, the group relocated to Annapolis Maryland and played every venue in every town that would have them. After adding Billy (guitar) to the group, they began opening for bands like Bad Religion and Blink 182 and Lit, and eventually played at WHFS’s HFStival before being signed to Epic and releasing their eponymous debut in 2000. Young and the Hopeless was released in 2002.

New school heroes Sum 41 may be neophytes in the world of music at large, but having honed their blend of pop punk melodies and hip-hop rhythms since the group’s 1996 inception in Toronto (purportedly 41 days into the summer between their junior and senior years in high school), they have quickly risen among the ranks of similar skate rock purveyors. Consisting of Derick Whibley (Bizzy D) and Dave Baksh (Brown Sound) on vocals and guitar, Steve Jocz (Stevo 32) behind the drums and Cone McCaslin (Cone) on bass guitar, this group sets themselves apart from the throngs of fellow new schoolers through their exceptional live energy and uncontainable stage presence. After signing to Island records in 1999 and releasing the Half Hour of Power EP the following year, the group toured in support of musical authorities Blink 182, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Offspring and Social Distortion. Their Jerry Finn-produced full-length, All Killer, No Filler, was released in 2001, and the metal-tinged follow-up, Does This Look Infected? is slated for release in late November, 2002.

This group sits comfortably in the pop-punk genre, finding solace in their honest, hard, fast and melodic music. Originally formed in Orange County New York, the band quickly developed their material, cementing their line-up in the winter of 1998. Doing what they love, they played every show and tour at their disposal. Their debut release Looking Up (recorded for the NY based Fastmusic Internet lable) earned them the opportunity to play with the likes of MXPX and The Get Up Kids. They have played The Vans Warped Tour several times, and recently signed up with Island Records, releasing a self-titled five song EP in April of 2002.
