Nelly
Nellyville
Editor's Review:
The much-anticipated follow-up to his multi-platinum debut album, Nelly's Nellyville
is set to hit stores in just a few days. On first listen, the disc seems a bit
imbalanced. Some of the 19 tracks fall well short of the standard set by the
others, as well as past Nelly hits. Largely up-tempo, smooth and braggadocios
with a touch of humor, Nellyville focuses lyrically on Nelly and his
crew's undeniable recent achievement. This does become a bit tiresome, but in
the post-gangsta rap era, the change of the game is to be expected. You've likely
heard "#1," "Work It" and "Hot in Herre," but
other standout tracks include "Oh Nelly" and its decidedly old-school
electronic sound, the ultra-smooth "Splurge," and "Dilemma,"
Nelly's take on the rap ballad.

Nelly
Bio[+]St. Louis-raised rapper Nelly (born Cornell Haynes Jr.) got his musical start fronting his hometown hip-hop collective, St. Lunatics, who had scored a Midwestern hit in 1996 with “Gimmie What You Got.” After dissolving the group, Nelly hit it big time with his 2000 Universal release, Country Grammar. His latest release, Nellyville (2002) continues on the party rap tip with clever, mass-appeal lyricisms and club dancing rhythms. A true pop artist of the 21st century, Nelly’s sphere of influence also includes movie roles and his own clothing line, Vocal.
