Wyclef Jean

Masquerade

Editor's Review:

Cast out on his own years ago when the Fugees broke up, Wyclef seems completely comfortable with his new role as a solo artist. Nevertheless, there's a difference between being comfortable and proficient. Masquerade, like past Wyclef projects, will be well-excepted by true fans who will produce enough support to get their former Fugee on MTV a bit, but this effort will likely fall well short of the kind of success that comes from converting new fans. My favorite cuts are the medium to fast-paced "Party Like I Party," "What a Night" and "You Say Keep It Gangsta," a neo-Rasta joint. Intriguing lyrics are also present on the otherwise mundane "Thug Like Me" and "Daddy," a spoken word eulogy to Wyclef's father.
