Ozma

The Doubble Donkey Disc

Editor's Review:

The Doubble Donkey Disc consists of two E.P.s, Russian Coldfusion and Bootytraps, and is in danger of being filed under "Weezer" in music stores. There are definite musical similarities, though Ozma lacks Rivers Cuomo's tight songwriting and lyrical charm. Regardless, it is difficult not to get stuck on the wealth of hooks and catchy rhythms Ozma packs into the album. The five tracks taken from the Bootytraps E.P. are bouncy pop-rock epics that solo, harmonize and explode in all the right places. Daniel Brummel, Jose Galvez and Ryen Slegr provide smooth, emotive, melodic vocals, and Star Wick adds bright keys that peek through overdriven guitars. She also lends her talents on the flute in "Continental Drift." The disc's highlight might be Ozma's perky rendition of "Korobeiniki," a traditional Russian folk song.
