Mr. Lif

Emergency Rations

Editor's Review:

Emergency Rations is a socio-politically charged collection of eight tightly laced jams that bring the hard funk, old school-style. This Boston MC, who now resides in Oakland, CA, raps about the declining state of life in America - not what would traditionally be called "party rap," but Lif's tight, beat-conscious delivery and the tracks he chooses to rhyme over are most certainly more than enough to get the dance floor bouncing. He spits venom over beats thick with ominous bass, simple but effective rhythmic patterns, twisted vocals and other melodic loops, all of it entwining into an undeniably head-nodding mix. As a wordsmith, Lif shows no mercy on the mic, at one point calling out one to blame by name: "Bush! Yeah you guessed it / I could smell the dawn of Armageddon when this dick was elected."

This Boston native is one of the independent rap game's most dissonant MCs, a lyrical burner who spits clever and jumpin' rhymes of a sociopolitical nature. As a member of the Definitive Jux label roster, Lif is in good company with El P, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock and more, and Lif's 2002 release, Emergency Rations just might be rap's definitive commentary on life in the millennium-to-date.
