Rjd2

Dead Ringer

Editor's Review:

Leave it to Def Jux to once again put out everyone's favorite hip-hop album till their next release comes. This time on the instrumental tip, Dead Ringer has already drawn comparisons to the early work of DJ Shadow. However, where Shadow has seemed to fall off in his spaced out atmospheres and worrying about the uniqueness of his samples, Rjd2 has taken his formula and evolved to the next level. I can only imagine the depth of this guy's library of samples. Tracks like "Good Times Roll Pt. 2" and "Ghostwriter" will get stuck in your head and keep you begging for more. The horns and organs are catchy as fuck but don't play themselves out as the beats progress and elevate to where you wish the new Shadow record would have gone. Guest MC appearances from Jakki the Motormouth and Blueprint are stellar, but the real star is Rjd2 and his trusty MPC. In an age where every crew has that guy who just dwells in his room, gets high and makes beats, what makes Rjd2's album stand out is that it stays true to the funk. Seriously, if you want to impress that psuedo-hippie stoner chick or just want to hear your bros say, "Dude, what album is this?" throw this record on next time you host a session. But hey, don't take it from me; you'll hear it soon enough.
