Sparta

The Wiretap Scars

Editor's Review:

Like the music of the fabled At The Drive-In, Sparta - whose drummer, bassist and guitarist are all refuges of ATDI - kick out polyrhythmic passages of dynamic rock that can be slow and churning, rife with harmonic and emotional tension, then explode into frenzied cacophony. Unlike that of ATDI, whose vibe seemed to follow a signature tone, Sparta's music is greatly varied within accepted rock music parameters. While some songs, like "Collapse," an ethereal pop-driven tune, are downright ballad-y, others contain elements that are explosive, such as the Karp-like chorus of "Air," which utilizes multiple screaming vocals over a hard-charging and hugely distorted hook that is impossible to hide from. This will no doubt appeal to the mainstream's gaggle of horn-rimmed, sweater-wearing alt-music fans who've been stuck with Weezer, nü-metal and various forms of golf-rock since ATDI disbanded.
