De La Soul
The Works
Editor's Review:
This European release (available for a tidy $25.00) is a collection of remixed songs from the De La classic 3 Feet High and Rising, plus a smattering of newer stuff, up through the recent Art Official Intelligence series. Although it's kind of cool, it's not worth the pricey cover charge. Sure, some re-tasked versions of songs like "Say No Go," the Native Tongues' posse cut "Buddy," and "Itsoweezee" from the Stakes Is High record are kind of dope. To be honest, nothing on this album flat-out sucks, but the remixes on The Works are decidedly not mind-blowing, and some songs, like the new-school disco rendition of "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturday," can even get a bit extreme in their reworked form. Completists have cause to rejoice, but despite a few gems, casual fans should steer clear. Go get Buhloone Mind State instead, as this remix album has none of that great record's tracks.- Philip Bole
