XXX Soundtrack

Editor's Review:

Kathy Nelson is a genius. Why? Because she is the person behind the XXX soundtrack. No, she didn't perform any music on it. She just compiled it. It's a double CD; one disc is rock, the other is rap. It's just that simple. With the rap / rock genre nearing extinction, it's nice to know that people like both types of music, but realize there probably shouldn't be a crossbreed genre of the two (no one wears backwards red hats anymore people). The first CD has every new age rocker from Rammstein and Drowning Pool to Moby and Gavin Rossdale on it. The real treat of the CD is the second disc, though. It's piled with everyone's favorite Top 40 rappers. Nelly, P. Diddy (I had that nickname first), N.E.R.D., and members of the Cash Money crew all donated some of their tracks to help make this CD a solid soundtrack for rock and rap fans alike.

Somewhere between socially conscious hip-hop and psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll lies N*E*R*D* (No One Ever Really Dies). Led by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the seminal Neptunes production collective (responsible for thick beats behind the likes of Jay-Z, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Mystikal, Mary J. Blige, Babyface, Usher, etc.), the Virginia-based group focuses their sound on the organic side of hip-hop, balancing rhymes and beats with guitars and live drums. Williams and Hugo have been creating music together since they met in 7th grade, and along with Shay, their N.E.R.D. partner in crime, the group released their debut album In Search Of… on Virgin Records in 2002.

Being born the great great grandnephew of Moby Dick author Herman Melville, it isn’t a far stretch to see where Richard Melville Hall got his nickname. Moby began playing classical guitar at an early age, and as a teenager found himself immersed in the New York punk / noise / new wave scene. After dropping out of college, Moby began DJing in nightclubs, and his 1991 single “Go” was an unprecedented hit in the UK. After signing with Elektra in 1994, he released Everything is Wrong in '95, earning him the first taste of critical praise. Not one to be easily categorized, his next full-length release Animal Rights was an electric guitar-fueled endeavor, and the ’97 follow up I Like To Score focused on re-devising film music. In 1999, Moby released the chart-topping Play, launching him into superstar status.

St. Louis-raised rapper Nelly (born Cornell Haynes Jr.) got his musical start fronting his hometown hip-hop collective, St. Lunatics, who had scored a Midwestern hit in 1996 with “Gimmie What You Got.” After dissolving the group, Nelly hit it big time with his 2000 Universal release, Country Grammar. His latest release, Nellyville (2002) continues on the party rap tip with clever, mass-appeal lyricisms and club dancing rhythms. A true pop artist of the 21st century, Nelly’s sphere of influence also includes movie roles and his own clothing line, Vocal.
