Queens of the Stone Age

Songs for the Deaf

Editor's Review:

Not only does QOTSA's third release feature Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) on drums, but it also showcases the ever-sharpening songwriting skills of Josh Homme (formerly of Kyuss), a master craftsman of smart, pop-infused metal. Songs For The Deaf may very well live up its name; nearly every song on this album, regardless of the its construction, has a thunderous, floor-shaking backbone. Between Homme's writing style and the rhythm section of Grohl and bassist Nick Oliveri, every punch, every bit of low end and every hard-hitting down-count has a serious weight behind it. Even songs that sport Homme's insightful and dynamic structures and changes, as well as passages of almost delicate vocal harmonies, are pinned by astronomically large, riff-oriented choruses. Make no mistake, QOTSA are poised to be 2002's best breakout band.
