Mars Volta

Tremulant

Editor's Review:

The Mars Volta, despite having never released anything prior to Tremulant EP, occupy a vaulted space in the annals of bedhead-core due to the previous endeavors of a pair of its members - Cedric and Omar of the late At the Drive-In. Being among the few who were never a fan of ATDI, I expected Tremulant to be an easy call; ATDI gone even further down the eclecto-cred spiral, a record awash in a sea of hipness. While this certainly proved to be true - despite Cedric's attempts at castrati vocals, one gets the distinct feeling of being here before - the three songs on Tremulant are nonetheless worthy of the incessant hype preceding them. "Concertina," with its vibraphone-backed second verse sung in Spanish and Hammond-esque keys satisfying the hipster-quotient and its singable melody, reverb washed vocals and pop-sensibility sucking in the latent-scenesters, provides ample evidence of The Mars Volta's return to the point at which ATDI was severed: the brink of spilling into mainstream notoriety.
