Rjd2, Blueprint

Soul Position: Unlimited EP

Editor's Review:

While Rjd2 is collecting mad kudos for his recently released Dead Ringer album, he's also keeping it real as Columbus, Ohio's hardest working hip-hop DJ, laying down the beats on this EP for the talented and prolific underground producer / MC, Blueprint. Together, this MC and DJ have made six tracks of masterful music, like the mid-tempo and steady-rolling "Mic Control," which bases its slightly somber tone on descending piano and bass lines punctuated by a snappy rim-shot, over which Blueprint kicks incendiary rhymes about fake rappers. "Night To Remember" is a bouncy, up-tempo jam with a hectic overtone in both the music and the vocal delivery, while "Oxford You Really Owe Me" is an amazing Rjd2 instrumental cut with lots of carefully placed layers that build a smooth, soulful and funky tune. The best part: this EP is just a precursor to a forthcoming full-length.
