Jurassic 5

Power In Numbers

Editor's Review:

Los Angeles' favorite six-man crew is back with a 17-track second release that has great potential to dodge the dreaded sophomore slump. With the video for the first single, "What's Golden," already getting airplay on MTV, it's obvious that bling isn't the only thing rap fans are looking for in the '02. Jurassic 5 crafts their rap in the old-school West Coast style - see Freestyle Fellowship, Cold Crush Brothers - more geared toward rocking parties and provoking thought than fueling drive-bys and glorifying drug dealers. These guys aren't gangsters, they're rap nerds, and they know their shit. The four-man MC attack - Chali 2na, Marc 7, Zaakir (Soup), Akil - is backed by two of the most respected DJs on the cut, Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark, and the result of their collaboration is a lot of fun, jazz-, funk- and soul-laced hip-hop music that's full of life and powered by skill.
